SUMMARY:CELEBRATING COMMUNITY: CREATING A NEW VISION OF JUSTICE
DESCRIPTION:Join us for food and fellowship as we conclude our week of events marking 16 years of no executions in North Carolina. We will gather at Pullen Park (Shelter #4) for a potluck and program at 6 pm. Speakers include Kristie Puckett-Williams\, Deputy Director for Empowerment and Engagement of ACLU\, and Lynda Simmons\, a restorative justice advocate who lost her son to homicide. We will also welcome a new NCCADP partner organization\, and throughout the evening we will imagine and commit to a future with no death penalty in our state. We hope to see you in person and promise you will leave feeling inspired! \nThis event is free but please let us know you’re coming. RSVP by 8/17. NCCADP will provide deli sandwiches and drinks. We invite you to bring a side dish or dessert if possible. Please email  NickCourmon@nccadp.org with any questions. Please note\, unfortunately the restrooms at Pullen Park will close at 6 pm.

SUMMARY:Racist Roots Screening: University of North Carolina Asheville
DESCRIPTION:  \nIn August\, North Carolina will mark sixteen years since its last execution\, yet the death penalty remains on the books. To honor this anniversary\, the NC Coalition for Alternatives to the Death Penalty is presenting the Asheville premiere of RACIST ROOTS\, a powerful 25-minute film that exposes the death penalty’s deep entanglement with slavery\, lynching and racism. The film features several stories of Black men\, including an Asheville man\, who were unjustly convicted and sentenced to death. The film and a panel discussion to follow will highlight the diverse voices that are central to the movement to end North Carolina’s death penalty. The panel will include activist and capital defense attorney Henderson Hill\, psychologist Jean Parks\, who lost her sister to murder\, and NCCADP executive director Noel Nickle. \nThe presentation at the Reuter Center on the campus of UNC Asheville is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Vigil of Remembrance & Recommitment
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we kick off a week of events to commemorate the 16th anniversary of North Carolina’s last execution. We will hold vigil outside Central Prison to remember the 43 people who were executed between 1970 and 2006\, when litigation halted executions in NC\, and the 136 people who still sit on death row. This event will raise the voices of people most proximate to the death penalty\, including people currently and formerly on death row\, and those who have lost family members to murder. Together we will say\, “Never again\,” and create a new vision of justice. \nGather outside the gates of the prison at 5:30. Rain or shine. Parking available either in the Boylan Heights neighborhood or in the gravel lot on Hunt Drive in Dix Park. If you have questions about this event\, contact Kristin Collins\, kristin@cdpl.org.
