SUMMARY:Time's Running Out: Commute Death Row!
DESCRIPTION:It’s time for us to come together once again to mark the anniversary of the last execution in North Carolina. This year we will gather on the actual anniversary\, August 18th\, when eighteen years ago Samuel Flippen was killed in the execution room at Central Prison. We’re excited to announce our program which will feature three incredibly inspiring people: Rev. Sharon Risher\, Britton Buchanan\, and Nick Courmon. Plan now to join us August 18th at 3:30 pm at Church on Morgan (136 E Morgan St) in Raleigh to be energized and empowered for the last remaining months of our Commutation Campaign!   \nRev. Risher is an author\, minister\, and activist whose mother and two cousins were among the nine people shot to death at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston. Britton Buchanan is a singer/ songwriter from Sanford\, NC\, and he is most known for being runner-up on season 14 of NBC’s The Voice. Nick Courmon is a member of our NCCADP team\, as well as a nationally award-winning poet. Both Britton and Nick will debut new pieces written especially for this event. All three of these individuals use their voices to advance death penalty abolition on the national level\, and we’re delighted they are joining us to do so in their home state of NC as well. Following the hour-long program at the church\, all who are interested will walk three blocks to take our demand for commutation directly to the gates of Governor Cooper’s residence. Last year’s August commemoration program was meaningful and transformative for our movement. This year your participation is all the more necessary as our call to Governor Cooper grows more urgent with only a few months remaining in our Commutation Campaign.

DESCRIPTION:Please join the North Carolina Coalition for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (NCCADP) and the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of New Bern (UUFNB) on Tuesday\, February\, 27th at 6 pm for a film screening and community conversation about the Commutation Campaign to end death row in North Carolina. This free event will be held at the UUFNB located at 308 Meadows St in New Bern\, and all are welcome.\n \n“Racist Roots” is a powerful 25-minute film that reveals the North Carolina death penalty’s deep entanglement with slavery\, lynching\, and racism. SUMMARY:Tell Gov. Cooper: No More Death Row!
DESCRIPTION:Please join people from across our state for a march and rally in Raleigh demanding commutation of our state’s 135 death sentences. In June\, NCCADP began convening a monthly Commutation Working Group including attorneys\, activists and people directed impacted by the death penalty. Our goal: To compel Governor Cooper to commute death sentences before he leaves office in 2024. It is time to launch our commutation campaign publicly. \nWe’ll meet at noon outside the gates of Raleigh’s Central Prison\, 1300 Western Blvd\, and walk 2 miles to the Governor’s Mansion. At 1:15\, we’ll gather at 200 E. Jones St. for speeches\, a spoken word performance\, music and more. If you don’t want to march with us\, come to both locations or just meet us at the mansion. \nIn the wake of the recent NC Supreme Court and Court of Appeals elections\, the time is ripe for us to begin this campaign that will continue until Governor Cooper leaves office. The launch is during the third annual Vigil for Freedom and Racial Justice. The event is open to all\, but we’d love to know you’re coming. So if possible\, please use the button to register. \nParking & Shuttles: If you meet us at Central Prison\, there is parking available on the campus of Dix Park. From Western Boulevard\, turn onto Hunt Drive directly across from Central Prison and you will see a gravel lot a short way up the road on the right. You can also park on the street in the Boylan Heights neighborhood beside the prison. If you join the march\, we will provide a shuttle back to your car after the rally concludes. If you meet us at the Governor’s Mansion\, you can find more information about parking here. \nTravel to Raleigh: If you need help getting to Raleigh\, carpools are happening across the state. In Asheville\, contact Jean Parks; in Charlotte contact Anne Cochran; and in Wilmington Rhonda Thomas. If you need financial assistance for travel costs\, reach out to Kristie Puckett Williams of the ACLU of NC.
