SUMMARY:Racist Roots Film Screening in collaboration with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Library
DESCRIPTION:Racist Roots is a 25-minute film created by the Center for Death Penalty Litigation which educates and brings awareness to the public about the injustices of the death penalty in North Carolina. The film explores the history of the death penalty in North Carolina and it’s entanglement with slavery\, lynching and racism\, and shares the stories and voices of advocates\, artists\, exonerees\, and people on North Carolina’s death row. \nDoors will open at 5:45pm for refreshments. A discussion will follow the film screening focusing on alternative forms to conventional criminal justice responses including restorative justice practices and the statewide gubernatorial campaign to commute all death sentences. Panelists will include Alfred Rivera\, a former death row exoneree and NCCADP’s Lived Experience Coordinator\, and Henderson Hill\, counsel for the ACLU’s Capital Punishment Project. Participants will have an opportunity to write postcards to Governor Cooper. \nThis program is in partnership with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library.

SUMMARY:"Love Lived on Death Row" Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join the Duke Human Rights Center for a screening of the film “Love Lived on Death Row\,” the third film in the 2023-2024 Rights! Camera! Action! Film Series. Love Lived on Death Row tells the story of the four Syriani siblings whose father was sentenced to die for the murder of their mother in 1990\, and Meg Eggleston\, who became their father’s friend and spiritual advisor through letters to him in prison. Orphaned and estranged\, the Syriani children raised themselves while they lived with hate\, anger and confusion as the man they could only refer to as “Him Him” lived on death row. But in 2004 they collectively decided to visit him in prison\, seeking answers so they could move on with their adult lives. What transpired that day was a miracle of forgiveness followed by a journey of healing\, restoring family memories and then a battle for his clemency. \nLove Lived on Death Row is more than an incredible story of forgiveness and love. It is a story of tragic loss\, transformation\, hope and how capital punishment affects the families of death row inmates. \nCo-Sponsored by the NC Coalition for Alternatives to the Death Penalty and The Center for Death Penalty Litigation

SUMMARY:The Fear of Too Much Justice
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with Stephen Bright\, one of the loudest and most persuasive voices on the problems of racism and classism in our criminal justice system for over 40 years. He has tried capital cases before juries in Alabama\, Georgia\, and Mississippi\, and argued cases before state and federal appellate courts\, including four capital cases before the United States Supreme Court. The Supreme Court reversed three cases because of racial discrimination in jury selection and the fourth because of the denial of funds for a crucial expert witness.

SUMMARY:Beyond Executions: Remembering 43 Lost & Creating a Future Without Death Row
DESCRIPTION:Join people from across our state in Raleigh on the 17th anniversary of NC’s last execution and to demand a future with no more death row. We’ll gather inside at Pullen Memorial Baptist Church for a short program that will include reading the names of the 43 people executed in NC since 1984 and spoken word. Then we will march about a mile to Central Prison\, where we’ll hold vigil in protest of state-sponsored killing. There will be some shuttles between locations for those who don’t want to march and to facilitate parking. This is a free event and everyone is welcome\, but please register to help us plan and so we can contact you with any updates.

SUMMARY:Racist Roots Film Screening and Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join us to watch “Racist Roots\,” a powerful 30-minute film that demonstrates the deep entanglement with white supremacy and racial terror lynching to today’s death penalty in North Carolina. After the film\, Noel Nickle\, Executive Director of the NC Coalition of Alternatives to the Death Penalty (NCCADP)\, will moderate a panel discussion ending with Q&A. Panelists will include Alfred Rivera\, an exoneree from NC death row; and Pastor Dewey Williams\, former chaplain on NC’s death row\, and author of “Finding Joy on Death Row: Unexpected Lessons from Lives We Discarded.”   We hope you will join us to become more “proximate” to the work to end this cruel practice in NC.  At this event\, there will also be an opportunity to sign a letter from “People of Faith” asking Gov. Cooper to commute the sentences of people on North Carolina’s death row. Hosts for this event\, which is free and open to the community\, include: Eno Friends Meeting\, Orange Cooperative Parish\, Mt. Bright Missionary Baptist & St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church.  Racist Roots is a project of the Center for Death Penalty Litigation.
