SUMMARY:The Death Penalty Protects No One: What We Need Instead | World Day Against the Death Penalty 2025
DESCRIPTION:The global theme for this year’s World Day Against the Death Penalty is rooted in decades of evidence. Quite simply\, the death penalty protects no one. \nAcross the world\, advocates are naming the truth that executions fail to deliver justice or safety. Here in North Carolina\, we join that call with a clear-eyed look at how the death penalty harms our own communities\, perpetuating racial injustice\, re-traumatizing survivors\, and siphoning resources away from the real solutions that prevent violence. \nOn October 11\, we gather to oppose capital punishment and to commit to what comes next. Together\, we will lift up the voices of survivors and community leaders who know firsthand that state violence does not build safety. We will dig into proven alternatives that move us closer to the just and safe communities every North Carolinian deserves – alternatives like violence prevention\, re-entry services\, and meaningful support for those impacted by crime. \nWe are honored to host Rafiah Muhammad-McCormick\, Director of Community Outreach for Tennesseans for Alternatives to the Death Penalty and a dedicated victims’ advocate\, as the keynote speaker.

SUMMARY:Walk for Commutation: Racist Roots Film & More in Chapel Hill
DESCRIPTION:Please join the North Carolina Coalition for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (NCCADP) and UNC-CH professors Frank Baumgartner and Mark Katz for an evening featuring the film Racist Roots\, music by Alim Braxton who lives on NC’s death row\, and spoken word by nationally award-winning poet Nick Courmon. “Racist Roots” is a powerful 25-minute film that reveals North Carolina’s death penalty’s deep entanglement with slavery\, lynching and racism. Following the film\, Mr. Braxton will call in to respond to questions. The program will take place in Howell Hall (rm 115) located at 213 E Cameron Ave. on the campus of UNC. \nThis event is part of NCCADP’s 136-mile Walk for Commutation\, calling on Governor Cooper to commute all death sentences. Participants will have the opportunity to write postcards to the Governor. Find more information about the Walk for Commutation here and sign up to walk in Chapel Hill with NCCADP at this link.

SUMMARY:Time's Running Out: Commute Death Row!
DESCRIPTION:It’s time for us to come together once again to mark the anniversary of the last execution in North Carolina. This year we will gather on the actual anniversary\, August 18th\, when eighteen years ago Samuel Flippen was killed in the execution room at Central Prison. We’re excited to announce our program which will feature three incredibly inspiring people: Rev. Sharon Risher\, Britton Buchanan\, and Nick Courmon. Plan now to join us August 18th at 3:30 pm at Church on Morgan (136 E Morgan St) in Raleigh to be energized and empowered for the last remaining months of our Commutation Campaign!   \nRev. Risher is an author\, minister\, and activist whose mother and two cousins were among the nine people shot to death at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston. Britton Buchanan is a singer/ songwriter from Sanford\, NC\, and he is most known for being runner-up on season 14 of NBC’s The Voice. Nick Courmon is a member of our NCCADP team\, as well as a nationally award-winning poet. Both Britton and Nick will debut new pieces written especially for this event. All three of these individuals use their voices to advance death penalty abolition on the national level\, and we’re delighted they are joining us to do so in their home state of NC as well. Following the hour-long program at the church\, all who are interested will walk three blocks to take our demand for commutation directly to the gates of Governor Cooper’s residence. Last year’s August commemoration program was meaningful and transformative for our movement. This year your participation is all the more necessary as our call to Governor Cooper grows more urgent with only a few months remaining in our Commutation Campaign.
