SUMMARY:CDPL Presents: The Public Launch of Racist Roots (Durham\, NC)
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Death Penalty Litigation will host the public launch of Racist Roots\, a powerful short film that reveals the North Carolina death penalty’s deep entanglement with slavery\, lynching and racism — and inspires people to join the movement to transform the criminal legal system. This 25-minute film traces the history of the death penalty and includes the stories and voices of advocates\, artists\, exonerees\, and people on North Carolina’s death row. Screening will be followed by a panel discussion including new NCCADP staff member Alfred Rivera\, an innocent man who was sentenced to death in North Carolina; Rep. Vernetta Alston\, a capital defense attorney turned state legislator; and Akili Brown\, the film’s director. The discussion will be moderated by CDPL founder Henderson Hill\, who is a senior staff attorney with the ACLU’s Capital Punishment Project. All who attend will learn how to get involved in the ongoing work to make the death penalty history. \nThis event is free\, but registration is requested.
