Racist Roots is a 25-minute film created by the Center for Death Penalty Litigation which educates and brings awareness to the public about the injustices of the death penalty in North Carolina. The film explores the history of the death penalty in North Carolina and it’s entanglement with slavery, lynching and racism, and shares the stories and voices of advocates, artists, exonerees, and people on North Carolina’s death row.
Doors will open at 5:45pm for refreshments. A discussion will follow the film screening focusing on alternative forms to conventional criminal justice responses including restorative justice practices and the statewide gubernatorial campaign to commute all death sentences. Panelists will include Alfred Rivera, a former death row exoneree and NCCADP’s Lived Experience Coordinator, and Henderson Hill, counsel for the ACLU’s Capital Punishment Project. Participants will have an opportunity to write postcards to Governor Cooper.
