We've been closely following NC House Bill 270 which aims to add firing squad and electrocution to lethal injection as methods of execution in our state. The bill will be heard in the Judiciary 2 committee this afternoon. We'll be sharing the live stream of the committee meeting on our FB page. Our response to the bill went out this morning. See the link our bio. A big thank you to our Coalition partners who are deeply engaged with us on strategy and communications support! And thanks to Lynda Simmons who is quoted in the release and pictured here with her husband John marching past the legislative building a few years ago. We join our Catholic partners @cmnendthedeathpenalty Catholic Mobilizing Network, Sisters of Mercy of the Americas and Catholics for Abolition in North Carolina in mourning the death of His Holiness Pope Francis. Without a doubt, Pope Francis' staunch opposition to the death penalty shifted the practice of capital punishment in our country in powerful ways, including President Biden's commutation of 37 federal death sentences.
We'd like to share the words of Krisanne Vaillancourt Murphy, the Executive Director Catholic Mobilizing Network: "Pope Francis knew the collateral damage of capital punishment and he insisted on humanizing the issue because it deeply touched his heart. My prayer today is that Pope Francis’ steadfast witness will touch our hearts and inspire us to fulfill his prayer to end the death penalty."
