In 2023 the NCCADP community showed up for rallies and marches, and people of faith signed a letter telling Governor Cooper to commute all death sentences to prison terms. Now it’s time for him to directly hear this message from all North Carolinians! The next step in our Commutations Campaign is a state-wide postcard campaign.
Please join us in sending thousands of postcards or letters from all parts of the state to Governor Cooper demanding he commute all death sentences. We need your help to show him there is widespread support for commutations; the single best solution for addressing the racist history and continued prejudicial use of the death penalty in NC’s criminal legal system. You can either write and mail a postcard we’ve designed or write to the Governor on your own. Feel free to write to him more than once!
Here’s our Call to Action!
- Write to Governor Cooper on your own. Tell him in a letter or a postcard that you create why he must commute all death sentences to prison terms. You do not need to create a postcard like ours. Keep it simple, any postcard is fine. Your letter can be short. Please include your full name and return address. You can send your correspondence to:
The Honorable Roy Cooper
Governor of North Carolina
20301 Mail Service Center
Raleigh, NC 27699-0301
You can find a fact sheet with data and statistics you can include in your postcard here.
Please let us know when you’ve mailed a postcard or letter here.
- Attend an in-person “Commutation Community Conversation” where you can write a postcard and take a stack of postcards to encourage others to write. Go to our events page to see where we will be next!
Want to do more?
Email Ricky if you would like to receive 20 postcards to send or invite others to write.
Email Nick if you are interested in planning and hosting a “Commutation Community Conversation” in your local community.
Thank you for making sure Governor Cooper hears your voice! The 136 people on North Carolina’s death row should not live in unending fear that their lives will be taken from them by the State. We cannot wait any longer. This is an urgent opportunity to make sure executions do not resume in the near future.
