Call to Action! Write Governor Cooper TODAY!

January 6, 2024

📬 Postcards and Letters Sent to Governor Cooper So Far!

As our Commutations Campaign continues to gain momentum in the New Year, we want to ensure that Governor Cooper hears our message loud and clear from all corners of North Carolina: commute all NC death sentences to prison terms! To make sure he hears from as many North Carolinians as possible, we have launched a state-wide Postcard Campaign!

We were proud to see a strong response in summer of 2023 to our sign-on letter from people of faith from all across our state. That letter followed our Faith Leader Letter, which was released in April. It was clear from the thousands of signatures we gathered that a groundswell of support for the Commutations Campaign was continuing to build. Now it’s time for Governor Cooper to hear from all North Carolinians.

With Governor Cooper leaving office at the end of 2024, the next several months are a critical time to show him why clearing the entirety of North Carolina’s death row is the best way to address the brutal racism of NC’s death penalty. We need the Governor to know that there is broad public support for the commutation of all NC death sentences from diverse North Carolinians.

We hope that you will take a few moments to tell Governor Cooper why exercising his clemency powers is important to you. Sending a postcard or letter to Governor Cooper is the most impactful thing you can do at the current time to help end the death penalty in our state. We hope to flood the Governor’s Mansion with such a large number of postcards and letters that this issue becomes impossible to ignore.

Find all you need to write Governor Cooper and other ways to support this initiative here. You can also learn more about the Commutations Campaign here. Thank you for strengthening our collective call to Governor Cooper: “No More Death Row!” by writing to him today.

Judge Weeks found that racism played a central role in the jury selection process that led to Marcus Robinson's death penalty conviction, even going so far as to state that Marcus' case proved the extent to which racism impacted capital cases across NC.

Despite the gravity of these findings, the NC General Assembly repealed the RJA only 1 year later.

Marcus Robinson was resentenced to life without parole. Tragically, he died by suicide in 2022 while serving out this sentence.
